The Ontario 28 traces its origins back to the C&C design team, and it has a reputation for being a very well built boat officially designed by Niagara Nautic Inc. In reality, the ONTARIO 28 was one of the first boats designed by Henry Adriaanse after he left the C&C design team. It is also one of the largest in its class, and it is actually larger than many 29 footers on the market. While it has an impressive 10 foot beam, the Ontario 28 has a very reasonable 4 foot draft.

Machushla was built in 1983, and except for a short six month cruise in the Caribbean, has been sailed in freshwater in central Canada. This Ontario 28 one has been outfitted for extending cruising and is well suited for the Great lakes or a trip south.

A short list of its many extras includes rope and chain windlass, high output alternator, wind vane andautopilot, 3 burner propane stove and oven, custom fitted opening ports and extra ventilation, larger diesel with closed cooling system, and much more. She includes a dodger, bimini, wheel steering, inner forestay, tri-sail mast track, furling headsail, full batten mainsail, and even a spinnaker and pole.

Engine

  • 15 hp, 2 cylinder Yanmar diesel (This is a larger optional motor. The standard engine on the Ontario 28 is the one cylinder 12 hp Yanmar);
  • Optional closed fresh water cooled system (engines on many boats are raw water cooled, which is okay in a body of fresh, but less than ideal when cruising in saltwater);
  • Electric engine compartment blower (not really needed for a diesel, but nice to have);
  • Large 3 blade propeller.
Sails

  • Full batten mainsail with 3 reefing points (with blue sail cover);
  • Lazy jack system for mainsail;
  • Mainsail halyard led aft;
  • Profurl system for headsail furling;
  • 130% furling genoa (with blue UV protection strip);
  • Multi-coloured spinnaker with pole;
  • Blade / jib headsail with battens (ideal for use in stronger winds in
    lieu of partly furled genoa);
  • Storm jib (small and made of heavy Dacron material);
  • Trysail (small sail made of heavy Dacron material – to be used in lieu
    of mainsail in serious storm conditions – there is a special track on the mast for this trysail).
Rigging

  • Most of the standing rigging has been upgraded;
  • Swageless Norseman Terminals on key parts of the standing rigging (Norseman terminals are extra strong and unlike swaged terminal, can be rigged at sea without special tools);
  • Solent stay – a second removable forestay. (This is a pre-tensioned second forestay which stores out of the way, but which can be connected in less than 30 seconds when needed. Very useful for hanking on the blade sail, storm jib, or other headsail in heavier winds when the genoa is fully furled on the permanent forestay.);
  • Backstay adjuster – hand turned wheel with gauge (handy for taking the sag out of the headsail);
  • Short inboard tracks for blade sail;
  • 18 or 19 stainless steel mast steps (*ready to reinstall – holes in mast covered with temporary plastic screws);
Electronics

  • High output 90 amp alternator with instruction manual (charges the batteries quickly);
  • 30 amp cable for shore power and 30 amp stainless steel power inlet;
  • Multi-stage battery charger (for charging the batteries with shore power – designed for marine use, not a Canadian Tire-type battery charger);
  • A three bank battery monitor computer (instant read out on battery status);
  • 2 large Surrette deep cycle 6 volt batteries (connected in series to provide for one very large 12 volt house battery);
  • One dual purpose deep cycle 12 volt battery for engine starting;
  • Grounded for lightning with grounding plate under the boat (rigging and all major metal components are bonded together and connected to the plate);
  • Energy saving navigation tri-light at top of mast.
  • Two depth sounders;
  • Stereo/radio with four speakers;
  • VHF radio with mast head antenna;
  • Electronic knot-meter
  • Garmin 172c GPS with maps for Lake Ontario, and western segment of St. Lawrence
  • Large, illuminated binnacle mounted compassAt one time the boat was equipped with a ham radio, and the backstay is equipped with isolators and is ready to use as a ham radio antenna. Also copper grounding sheets necessary for ham radio installation included (*ready to install).
Steering

  • Wheel steering with a good size stainless steel wheel;
  • Emergency tiller;
  • Windvane steering – can also act as emergency rudder
  • Electronic Autopilot (Autohelm – works with the windvane steering);
On Deck

  • Extra security of low bulwarks around deck;
  • Spacious “T” shaped cockpit (easy to get around in cockpit);
  • Aft cockpit mainsheet traveler (not installed – in addition to the standard main sheet traveller );
  • Four cowl vents (removable) and 4 dorade boxes;
  • Two aft cowl vents;
  • Stainless steel boom gallow (A great handhold when leaving the cockpit, and it makes lowering and storing the boom much easier.)
  • Folding dodger (blue);
  • Folding bimini awning – blue (rigged for use under sail);
  • Canvas filler (zips in between the dodger and awning for full cockpit coverage);
  • Mosquitoes screen for cockpit (attaches with velcro);
  • Canvas cover for forward hatch – blue (suspended above the hatch and forward deck area for shade and to keep rain out).
  • Dodger, bimini, and insert only 2 years old

  • Two large and two smaller opening ports (optional equipment);
  • Screens for opening ports and velcro screens for hatches;
  • Very easy to use fold down table (sets up or stores in about 5 seconds);
  • Extra storage space (shelves) inside in v-berth area;
  • Extra lighting in v-berth.

Repositionable 12v cabin fans

  • Filter to clean water from the water tank (for water to the sink);

  • Propane solenoid safety valve/switch;
  • New upgraded propane hoses.
